Chapter 14: Eyes Open

The lake villa sat behind a wall and a gate with two guards in a lit booth.

Wenxin watched it from the back seat of Haoran's car, with the engine off and the lights out.

"Madam is at the Group's dinner until eleven," Haoran said. "My old driver sent me the guest list."

"And the guards?"

"They know the car. They don't know I was suspended."

He checked his watch.

"Nine o'clock, Anqi said. The night nurse comes at nine."

Anqi sat beside Wenxin with her bag on her knees and her coat buttoned to the throat.

"There's a door by the kitchen," she said. "I used to come in that way before they moved him."

"Used to?" said Haoran.

"I was the cook's friend once. Madam never asked who was in her kitchen."

Her chin lifted.

"Nobody asks the staff."

Wenxin knew that better than anyone.

Haoran went up to the guard booth, and the guards stood.

"My brother's wife is here to see him," he said.

The gate opened. They saw a brother, a wife, and a woman with a bag, and they did not look twice at the bag.

The house was quiet and smelled of lilies.

Mingxuan's room was at the end of a long hall on the ground floor, with the lake outside its window.

Two women in white were inside. One folded towels. The other was the night nurse, early, with a tray.

On the tray lay a filled syringe.

Wenxin walked in as if she owned the house. For three years she had been told she did.
