Chapter 15: The Whole Truth

Haoran had rehearsed this moment for three years, and none of the versions had a brother in them saying those words.

"Mingxuan," he said. "She's Wenxin. She's been sitting by your bed every week."

His brother's eyes moved to Anqi's hand in his, then back.

"I know Wenxin," Mingxuan said slowly. "She was the housekeeper's girl. She carried my books." He swallowed, and it clearly hurt. "I never married anyone."

Wenxin had gone white to the mouth.

She took her phone out with fingers that would not hold still and opened a photograph.

It was the red certificate, shot flat on a table.

"This is what Madam brought me," she said. "You signed it before your surgery. She said you asked for me."

Mingxuan looked at the screen for a long time.

Haoran looked at it too, though he had no need. He could have drawn it from memory.

The bride's name was in neat print. The groom's signature leaned backward, every letter tipped against its neighbour.

"That is not my hand," Mingxuan said.

"No," Haoran said.

Wenxin turned to him.

The room was so quiet he could hear the lake.

"You knew," she said.

"Yes."

"When?"

"The first week."

He had thought about how to say it, and in the end there was only the plain way.

"I saw the certificate on Madam's desk the day after you signed. I saw the signature. It leans the way she writes."

He made himself hold her eyes.

"I was in her study to ask about my passport. I never got an answer. I got that."

"You knew for three years," Wenxin said. "You sat in his chair. You watched me."

"Yes."

"You let me think I was a wife."

"If I'd told you, you would have gone to Madam with it. You can't lie to her face, Wenxin. She would have known in a minute, and she'd have kept you out of that room for good."
