I read the line three times with honey on my thumb.
Abe was still singing.
He turned around with the spatula, saw my face, and stopped.
"What?"
I held up the phone.
He read it, and he didn't move for a long second.
Then he turned off the burner.
"What does that mean?" I said. "Fetal heart tones. On arrival."
"It's what we listen for. The baby's heartbeat."
"I know what it is. I coded it for five years. What are they going to ask you?"
He set the spatula down very carefully on the spoon rest.
"Prewitt. Can I answer that after the deposition?"
"Why after?"
"Because I want to say it once, under oath, the right way. Then I'll tell you all of it. Every word. Whatever you want to know."
He was looking straight at me.
I thought about the stairwell, and the yellow rail, and the way he'd let go of me the second I moved.
"Okay," I said. "After."
He came and stood between my knees again and put his forehead on mine.
He didn't say thank you. His hands on my thighs said it.
