Chapter 21: Nine Minutes
The court reporter's fingers stopped.
"About nine minutes," Holden's lawyer repeated. "From 6:38 to approximately 6:47."
"Approximately."
"So for nine minutes, that infant was alive in the care of the county hospital. And your team didn't deliver her until 6:51."
"Her heart rate was in the sixties and falling when I opened the car door," Abe said. "We had her mother on the table in eight minutes. That's fast. That's very fast."
"But not fast enough."
"Nothing was fast enough by then. The cord had been compressed for half an hour."
"Half an hour you weren't there for," the lawyer said. "So you can't know that."
I stood up.
The legal aid lawyer put her hand on my arm.
"Ms. Prewitt, we're on the record."
"I can leave," I said. "I'm allowed to leave."
I walked out of the glass room, past the receptionist, into the elevator.
My reflection in the brass doors looked like somebody I'd seen in a newspaper.
