Chapter 12: What Kevin Wants

Lucas stood on the back steps with his hand still on the rail.

"What did he want."

"Come inside."

"What did he want, Daniel."

Daniel stepped back and let him in and shut the door and locked it.

The office was one room and a desk and a lot of shelves.

There was a couch with a blanket on it. Somebody had been sleeping here.

"Sit down."

Lucas didn't sit down.

"He came to talk about distribution. That's what he said."

"And?"

"And he talked about distribution for six minutes."

Daniel walked to the desk and picked up a glass of water and put it down again.

"Then he asked me how long I'd known you."

Lucas's stomach went cold.

"What did you say."

"I said I don't know you. I said we'd met once at a screening two years ago."

"Did he believe you."

"I don't know."

Daniel rubbed his face.

"He looked at the couch. He looked at the blanket. Then he left."

Lucas sat down on the couch after all.

"He knows."

"He suspects. There's a difference."

"There's no difference with him."

"Then we move faster."

Daniel opened a drawer and took out a folder and set it on the desk.

"I've got a name. The storage room with the second set of books. It's in Burbank."

"Whose name."

"A man who used to do their books. He left in twenty-one."

"Does he know you."

"No. But he knows Maverick."

Lucas took the folder and opened it. One page. A name, an address, a phone number.

"Give me a week," Daniel said. "Don't do anything. Don't touch that folder again."
