Chapter 13: The Room of Books

Lucas didn't move.

The towel was still in Kevin's hands. The water was still running into the sink behind him.

"Say that again."

"I know you took something from the study."

"I moved a page."

"You moved a page."

"Yes."

Kevin let go of his face and stepped back.

"You moved a page and put it back in the wrong place."

"I did."

"Why."

"Because I was in there."

"Why were you in there."

"Because you opened the door."

Kevin looked at him.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I have."

Kevin stood in the kitchen with his arms at his sides for a long minute.

Then he picked up his beer and drank the rest of it and set the glass down hard.

"Don't do it again."

"I won't."

"Look at me."

Lucas looked at him.

"Don't do it again."

"I won't."

They went to bed in separate rooms.

Lucas lay awake on the other side of the wall and listened to the waves.

Sunday afternoon Kevin drove back to the city alone for a meeting.

Lucas called Daniel from the landline in the beach house kitchen.

"Now," Daniel said. "Today. He's at the lot until six."

The storage place was on the east end of Burbank, past the airport.

It was a low gray building with a roll-up door and a sign that said BAY 14 STORAGE.

Daniel was parked across the street in a sedan Lucas had never seen.

He got in.

"You're sure."

"I'm sure."

"Because if this goes wrong, we both go down."

"Then don't go wrong."

Daniel pulled out a key on a plastic tag and held it up.
