Chapter 14: The Filmmaker

Kevin was at the counter with his laptop open and a glass of water going flat.

He looked up when Lucas came in.

"You walked up the hill."

"I like the hill."

"You've been gone four hours."

"I walked into town."

Kevin turned back to the laptop.

Lucas went upstairs and put Daniel's phone under the mattress.

He lay down on top of the covers with his shoes still on.

In the morning he came down and made coffee and sat at the counter.

Kevin was already dressed. Navy suit. No tie. He was on a call.

Lucas waited until he hung up.

"I want to direct."

Kevin looked at him.

"What."

"I want to direct. I wrote something. I want to shoot it."

Kevin laughed.

It wasn't the laugh from the meeting room. It was shorter and it was worse.

"You want to direct."

"I've been writing it for eight months."

"Eight months."

"Since before the contract."

Kevin set his cup down and turned on the stool to face him.

"Lucas. You signed page eighteen."

"I signed to stop acting. It says acting."

"It says any role in any motion picture."

"A director isn't a role."

Kevin looked at him for a second.

Then he stood up and walked around the counter and stopped in front of him.

"You're not going to do that."

"Why not."

"Because it's the same thing. You'd be on a set. You'd be in the trades. People would know."

"People would know what."

"That you're working."

Lucas sat there.

"That's what you're worried about."
