Chapter 12: The Lights

The Wexley Group boardroom had a table for twenty and a view over the whole financial district.

Felix walked in at ten past nine with Casper beside him, and every head turned.

Casper wore the new suit.

At the open collar of his shirt, the fresh bite mark showed, dark and clear.

Nobody looked away from it.

"You're not on the agenda," said the chairman, an old man with a cane.

"I'm not here for the agenda," Felix said. "I'm here for the money."

Rowan stood at the head of the table with a pile of papers in front of him and shadows under his eyes.

Freddy sat at his right hand, relaxed, a folder under his palm.

"Felix." Rowan's voice cracked. "This is a closed meeting. Security will..."

"Let him speak," Freddy said, smiling. "I think we'd all like to hear it."

He knew.

"Lantern Capital," he said.

A murmur ran around the table.

"You all know the name. For six years it has been Wexley Group's largest investor.

"It bought the first lease, it underwrote the Harbor loan, and it kept the doors open through the winter your auditors still don't discuss."

"Everyone knows that," Rowan said. "We don't know who's behind it."

"You do now."

Felix set his phone on the table.

On the screen was the deed, the signature, and the date.
