Chapter 13: On His Knees

Rowan was waiting in the lobby of Lantern Tower when they came down at eight the next morning.

He had slept in his suit, or hadn't slept at all.

The board had voted him out of the chair at midnight, and the news was already on every screen in the building.

Two receptionists, a courier and four men from the security desk watched him pretend not to see them.

"Felix." He crossed the marble in a rush. "Felix, please. Five minutes."

"No."

Rowan went down on his knees.

He did it all at once, and the sound of his knees on the marble carried to the lifts.

"I'm begging you," he said. "I'll sign anything. Renew the loans and I'll put the Harbor building in your name. I'll go on television and say it was my fault."

"It was your fault."

"Then say what you want!"

Felix looked down at him.

Three weeks ago he would have given anything to see this, and now it was only tiring.

"I wanted a husband who stood beside me at my own wedding," he said. "You can't give me that. Get up."

"Freddy told me you would never do this to me."

"Freddy told you a lot of things."

Rowan's mouth twisted, and for a moment the old sneer came back.

"He's using you too, you know. He keeps everything. Every dinner, every call, he records it all, and he sent me the whole plan afterwards so I couldn't back out. Do you think he'll spare you?"

"I think you should have thought of that before you let him plan my wedding."

Rowan laughed, a ragged sound, and turned his head.

Casper stood a step behind Felix with his hands folded in front of him.

"And you," Rowan said. "Look at what you've done."
