Chapter 15: Two Lines

Casper sat on the edge of the clinic bed with his hands pressed between his knees.

Felix stood at the window with his back to him.

He had said almost nothing since the car.

That frightened Casper more than anything else, and it was a long list.

The doctor came in with two small white strips and put them on the tray.

"Both of you," she said. "Same result."

Casper stared at the strips.

Each one had two clear pink lines.

"That's not possible," he said. "We're both omegas."

"It's rare, not impossible. Fated pairs sometimes conceive across both bodies when the bond is sealed after a shared heat."

She looked at her notes.

"Mr. Froster, yours dates from your own heat, five weeks ago.

"Mr. Ride's dates from his. You each carry the other's child."

Casper's mouth had gone dry.

He turned to look at Felix.

Felix hadn't moved from the window.

"Felix?"

"One moment."

His voice was strange, and his shoulders were stiff under the dark jacket.

The doctor looked from one to the other and gathered her papers.

"I'll give you a minute," she said, and went out.

The door closed.

Casper waited.

All the old thoughts came up, one after another.

He was twenty, with no degree and no money, and he had cost this man his wedding, his brother and now his seat.

He was going to have a baby, and so was Felix, and Felix hadn't asked for either one.

"You don't have to," Casper said, and his voice shook. "I mean, I know it's a lot. I'll understand if you want me to..."

Felix turned around.

His grey eyes were wet.
