Chapter 21: The Safe

Maura woke on a narrow bed with a taste of metal in her mouth.

The ceiling was white and the light was grey.

Through the window she could see a flagpole, and past it, flat water.

She knew the house before she sat up.

The door opened, and the old man came in with his cane and a paper cup of tea.

"Drink this. It will take the chemical out of your head."

"Where is Vincent?"

"In Dedham, I imagine, shouting at his father." He set the cup down on the nightstand. "You were delivered to my gate at eleven o'clock by two of Carlo's men. They left a note."

He took a card from his pocket and held it out between two fingers.

The handwriting was gentle and slanted, and she knew it from forty birthday cards.

Keep her until the boy walks in. Then everyone can be at peace.

The card was signed with one letter: C.

"He sent me his son's wife," the old man said, "tied up like a gift. As if I were a dog he'd been feeding."

Maura felt the room tilt.

"Why would Carlo..."

"I will answer that. First I will keep my promise." He turned and tapped the door with the head of his cane. "Ten minutes."

It was the glass room.

The woman in the cardigan let her in without a word, and she dropped to her knees on the rug.

Finn looked up from the toy kitchen.
