Chapter 22: Papa

The old man did not stop the recording.

Maura sat very straight in the leather chair with her hands pressed between her knees.

"You'll want to hear the rest," said Carlo's voice from the little machine. "Your son is dead and mine is dead. The war has cost us both enough."

"Go on," said the old man's voice, drier and younger.

"I'll give you the dock, the hour and the day. Friday, four in the afternoon, a warehouse on the Chelsea water. Both boys will be at the school gate. Take both."

"Both."

"Take both. Offer him a choice. He'll take his brother's son, I promise you."

"Why?"

"My Vincent swore it at the bed where his brother died. He has never broken his word in his life."

"And the other child?"

"The nurse's boy." The calm voice did not change. "He has his mother's grey eyes. Keep him fed. In a month he will stop asking."

A silence on the tape.

"You would give me your own grandson."

"I would give you a peace that lets the rest of us live. The family needs a Saraceno heir with the right blood."

"And the nurse's child?"

"A nurse from Southie gave my son a child who was never going to be ours."

Maura's nails cut into the leather of the chair.

"And Vincent?" the old man said.

"He will never forgive himself. That's the best part."

"Why?"

"A man who cannot forgive himself stays obedient. In a year he will be a better underboss than he has ever been."
