Chapter 18: What Repair Costs
On Wednesday morning at ten, Carl's father's pickup stopped at the bottom of the lane, and Rupert got out and walked up.
His own car had sat in my drive since Sunday night.
I was on the porch with a mug and a broom, and I did not put either one down.
He was carrying a brown envelope.
The bruise had gone purple and yellow overnight, and he had shaved badly.
"I won't come in," he said at the bottom of the steps.
"No."
"I wanted to bring you this myself."
He climbed three steps, and put the envelope on the rail, and went down again.
"What is it?"
"My statement to the trooper. They gave me a copy." His voice was dry and steady. "The county attorney will decide the rest. The trooper said that with the report corrected, it will probably be a charge."
"Probably."
"Probably, and they said not to leave the county."
"I wasn't planning to take you anywhere."
He nearly smiled.
It faded.
"The second thing is in the envelope too. It's a paper that gives up everything I could ever claim on the lake house. Any share, any interest, any use. I signed it in front of a notary at the post."
"Marcy wanted my name on the deed," he said. "She'd have had it by Saturday."
"I know what she wanted."
"I know you know."
I looked at him.
He was a broad man, and he'd always taken up the doorway when he stood in it.
He stood on my grandmother's snow now and seemed to take up a little less than the space he stood in.
"The third thing is your money," he said, and held up his phone.
