Chapter 19: Stay

Cal's POV

The girl from the bait counter sat at Greta's kitchen table for two hours with her laptop open and told it from the beginning.

I stayed by the stove with my arms folded.

I wasn't needed, but Greta had not asked me to leave, and I wasn't going to be the one who did.

When the girl finished, Greta walked her to the hatchback herself.

"I'll drive you to the post in Two Harbors in the morning," I told the girl through the window. "You'll give them the drafts and the app history. All of it."

"Will I go to jail?"

"I don't know. I know it's a better thing than not going."

She nodded, and her hands tightened on the wheel, and she drove away down the lane at ten miles an hour.

It was dark by then, with a wind coming off the lake.

Greta stood on the porch watching the taillights go, and I went back in and made the fire.

The grandmother's wedding portrait leaned against the porch wall in a gray blanket.

The glass had cracked on Friday.

I'd carried the frame out that afternoon to take to town for new glass.

It was a heavy frame, oak, and it had been in that house for sixty years.

I'd set it where the wind wouldn't reach it.

Greta came in and shut the door, and stood in the middle of the room.

"I can't sit down," she said.

"Then don't."

"Everything's finished. Rupert's finished, and Marcy is finished, or will be tomorrow. And I should feel something."
