Chapter 12: Tea at the Savoy

The Savoy served tea in a room with a glass roof, and at four o'clock on Monday every table was taken.

I had left Tilly with Bridie, and told Bridie where I was going.

Cressida was waiting by the window in a cream dress, with her hands folded on the cloth.

She stood up when she saw me.

She had already ordered.

A pot of Assam stood at my place, and a jug of cold milk beside it, and a plate with one slice of lemon.

"I hope I got it right," she said. "Rafe told me once how you take it."

I sat down and did not touch the cup.

"You didn't mention that before," I said.

"I'm sorry?"

"That you and my husband talk about how I take my tea."

Her smile faltered, only a little.

"Rhiannon, I know how this looks."

"Tell me how it looks."

"Like I've hurt you very badly." She leaned in and lowered her voice. "I want to begin by saying that I never meant to. I was twenty-seven and frightened and alone, and he was the only person who answered my phone."

"You were pregnant by a married man."

"Yes."

"For six years you let me stand next to him at christenings and Christmases."

"I wanted to tell you." Her eyes shone. "Every single year. Rafe wouldn't hear of it."

At the next table a woman in a hat had stopped stirring her tea.
