Chapter 13: The Study Log

"Play the rest," I said.

Cressida's thumb was already on the screen, and she did not lift it.

"That is the rest, darling. He hung up."

"Then give me the phone."

"I can't do that." She slid it back into her handbag and closed the clasp. "It's the only proof I tried."

"A second ago you said you kept it for me."

She opened her mouth and said nothing at all.

I stood up.

At the next table the woman in the hat quickly looked at her own cup.

"The two million stays on the table until Friday," Cressida said softly. "Please think of Tilly."

"I am," I said. "That's why I'm leaving."

I walked out through the glass room without looking back.

On the Strand I rang Bridie and told her I was going to Hallam Court tonight.

"Alone?" she said.

"Then I'll knock."

"Take the good coat," said Bridie. "It's cold up there, and they like a coat."

I reached the beech drive after dark.

The housekeeper opened the door before I rang.

She was in a cardigan with her glasses on her head, and she looked at me for a while.

"Miss Sedley is in London until tomorrow," she said. "Miss Posy is with her."

"I haven't come for them," I said. "I want to ask about last Monday afternoon."

"Come into the kitchen."

She made tea I did not want, and I drank it.

"The agency cancelled Tilly's nanny at twelve minutes past four," I said. "Someone did it from my husband's login. He says he was in a meeting in Zurich."
