Chapter 31: It's Yours

The whole hall waited.

Scott stayed on one knee with his bandaged hand flat against his chest.

I'd waited nine years for him to look up at me.

"Get up, Scott," I said.

"Not until you answer."

"I answered in the hospital. I answered on the sidewalk. I answered in your car."

"Then answer here."

I lifted the microphone, so the back row would hear it too.

"No," I said.

He didn't move.

"You asked me to sit in the back, and I sat in the back. You asked me to wait in a burning car, and I waited."

I looked down at him.

"I'm not coming home."

The camera's red light was right on his face.

He closed his eyes for a second.

Then he got up, slowly.

At the foot of the stage the reporter from Channel Eight held her microphone up toward him.

"Mr. Dalton," she said. "In July, at the garden, I asked you a question and you walked out."

He looked down at her.

"Did you know your wife was trapped in the car?"

The hall was so quiet I heard the camera's motor.

"Yes," Scott said. "I looked right at her. She said help me. I went for the necklace."
