I read it twice on the top step.
Then I handed it to Jesse.
He read it once, with Mabel asleep on his shoulder.
"Lead witness," he said. "That means you go first."
"It means I go first."
"Then you'll go first," he said, and carried his daughter down the stairs to the truck.
The lawyer from the attorney general's office came to my flat on Wednesday.
She was young, in flats, with a rolling briefcase she had to bump up my outside stairs.
The state had charged Bryce with fraud for selling a faster place in an emergency line.
The state was also suing TenScore.
Before any trial, both sides took sworn statements. Depositions.
Mine was in two weeks. His was the week after.
"His lawyer gets to question you," she said. "For as long as he wants. He'll try to make you angry. Angry witnesses say things."
"I've been angry since January."
"Then don't be angry in the room." She snapped her briefcase shut. "Be boring. Boring is bulletproof."
Jesse made flashcards that night.
He wrote them at my kitchen table with a black marker, the way he wrote run sheets.
