"No," my lawyer said.
"Wait," I said.
Everyone looked at me. Jesse, my lawyer, the man in the gavel cufflinks.
"He can have five minutes," I said. "Not alone."
"Who, then?"
"The families. Whoever wants to come."
The lawyer looked at me for a long moment.
"I'll ask him," he said.
He came back in ten minutes.
"He agrees."
Bryce's deposition was the next Wednesday, at ten in the morning, in the same state building.
At nine-thirty the small conference room next door was full.
The widow sat in the front, in her husband's parka, though it was eighty degrees outside.
