Chapter 5: Seedlings

Angela's eyes went straight to my stomach.

The tray of tomato starts was resting on it.

There was no hiding it, not anymore, not in a flannel shirt in April.

She walked toward me through the gate, her heels sinking into the gravel with every step.

"Well," she said. "So it's true."

I set the tray down on the nearest table.

"What are you doing here, Angela?"

"Your little friend posts everything." She held up her phone. A picture of me laughing, with a seed tray, from Thursday. "Did you think nobody would look?"

People were turning around.

A man with a wagon full of herbs stopped on the path.

A mother pulled her little boy closer by the hood.

"You should go," I said.

"I just got here." She tilted her head at my stomach. "How far along are you? Four months? Five?"

I didn't answer.

"Mom said you'd get fat." She laughed. "She was right about everything else, too."

"Angela. Leave."

"No, I want everyone to hear this." She turned in a slow circle so the whole nursery could see her. "This woman married my brother for money. One year, all paid for. And then the second her contract's up, surprise, she's pregnant."

Somebody murmured.

I felt my face go hot, and I hated it.

"She took twenty million dollars and ran," Angela said. "And now she thinks she gets a second payday."

"I haven't asked anyone for anything."

"Not yet." She smiled. "You will."

"Whose is it even?" she went on. "You were alone in that apartment all year. It could be the doorman's. It could be anybody's."

Libby came out of the greenhouse at a run, wiping her hands on her jeans.

"Hey," she said. "Hey! You need to get off my property."

"Your property?" Angela looked at the patched greenhouses. "You mean this?"

She reached out and tipped the nearest table.

Forty little pots of basil went over the edge and smashed on the gravel.
