"No," I said.
Teresa smiled.
"It's cold out here, dear. And you shouldn't be standing in a draft in your condition."
"How did you find my house?"
"You bought it through a trust in Portland. The trust paid a property tax bill on Thursday." She lifted one shoulder. "It's a very small state."
The man with the briefcase looked at his shoes.
I didn't move out of the doorway.
"Say what you came to say."
"On the porch?"
"On the porch."
She sighed, and leaned on the cane, and looked out at the water.
"It's a lovely view. Your grandmother cleaned this house, didn't she?"
I didn't answer.
"I do my homework," she said. "Here's what I know. You're about four months along. My doctor friends tell me a pregnancy your size is more than one baby."
My hand moved to my stomach before I could stop it.
She saw it.
"How many?" she asked.
I kept my mouth shut.
"It doesn't matter," she said. "Whatever the number, those children are Fontanas. And Fontanas aren't raised in a summer cottage by a gardener."
"They're mine."
"They're half mine." She nodded to the man. "Show her."
He opened the briefcase and held out a check.
It was made out to me.
$10,000,000.00.
"Ten more," Teresa said. "On top of the twenty. When the children are born, you sign them over to the family. We raise them in New York, in the best schools, with the best of everything. You keep the money and the house and your little nursery, and you go on with your life."
