Chapter 8: Four

Neither of us said anything.

A car door slammed somewhere on the level above.

Leo looked at my stomach.

"Are they mine?" he said.

His voice cracked on the last word.

I held the strip of pictures tighter.

"They?"

"Libby's father told me it was more than one." He swallowed. "He told me if I upset you, he'd put me in the harbor."

"He would."

"I believe him."

"How did you find me?"

"My sister's car service." He pushed a hand through his hair. "She charged a trip to Cape Elizabeth to the company account. I went through every bill. I went to the nursery this morning, and your friend threw a hose at me."

"Good."

"Her father came out and said you'd be here at ten." He looked at me. "Louisa. Please. Are they mine?"

I thought about lying.

For one second, I really did.

Then I unrolled the strip of pictures and held it out.

He took it.

"Four," I said. "Two boys and two girls. The night of my mom's funeral. There wasn't anyone else."

He looked at the pictures.

He kept looking.

Then he put his free hand over his mouth and turned around and faced the concrete wall.

His shoulders went up and down a few times.

I waited.

When he turned back, his eyes were red.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"You texted me a divorce the day I found out."

"Before that..."

"I found out that morning, Leo. On Fifth Avenue. I was standing there holding the picture when your text came."

He closed his eyes.

"God."

"And then your sister went through my suitcase and took it." My voice got hard. "And your mother came to my porch with a check for ten million dollars to give them to her."

His eyes snapped open.
