Chapter 9: Four Cribs
"That's not mine," Leo said.
He said it to the phone first, then to me.
"Louisa. That's not mine. I have never touched Blythe Carrow. Not once. Not ever."
"Your mother says she's expecting your child."
"My mother says a lot of things." He was already dialing. "I'm calling her right now."
"Don't."
He stopped with the phone halfway to his ear.
"Don't call her for me," I said. "I've had a year of you telling me things and then disappearing back to New York. I don't need you to tell me. Show me."
He looked at me for a long time.
Then he put the phone in his pocket.
"Okay," he said.
That was all.
I got in my car and drove home, and I didn't look in the mirror to see if he was following.
He wasn't.
On Tuesday at 8:52, he was sitting in the back row of the waiting room at Maine Med.
He wore jeans and a navy sweater and looked like he hadn't slept since the parking garage.
When they called my name, he stood up and waited to see if I'd nod.
I nodded.
He sat in the corner of the exam room on a plastic chair and didn't say a word, just like he'd promised.
But when the four heartbeats came on the monitor, all galloping at once, he made a small noise and covered his face with his hand.
The doctor with the gray ponytail looked at him, then at me.
"Is he going to be useful?" she asked.
"I don't know yet."
"Well, he'd better be. You'll need somebody to carry things."
On the way out I asked him where he was staying.
"There's a room over the bait shop on the wharf," he said. "Month to month."
"The bait shop."
"It was the only thing for rent in Cape Elizabeth that would take a man with no references."
I tried not to laugh and failed.
