Chapter 15: You Don't Get to Choose
"Get up off my floor," Oonagh said.
I was already getting up.
I pulled my sweater straight and buttoned it, one button at a time, with my eyes on her.
Cormac stood beside me with his trousers fastened and his shirt in his hand.
He did not hide.
"You were dressed for Mass at four hours' notice," I said. "That's quick, Mrs. Shanahan."
"My name is Oonagh to you now, is it?"
"You've called me Maureen for nine years. I'll call you what I like."
Her gloved hands tightened on the missal.
"You've taken my grandson out of his bed, and you've put him in a room with a stranger," she said. "I'll have the police to this house."
"Call them," I said. "Tell them about the doctor in Milton."
The colour went out of her face.
It went in a slow wave from the forehead to the chin, and it did not come back.
It was the first time I had seen it, and I wanted to look at it for a year.
"I don't know what you mean," she said.
"Ma," Cormac said quietly.
"I'll not be spoken to like this in my own kitchen by a girl who ran off," Oonagh said.
"Get out of the kitchen, Ma," he said.
"It's my house," she said.
"It's my father's house," Cormac said. "It's been mine eight years. Go to Mass. Say what you like to the priest. But go out of this room."
She looked at her son.
She looked at the hole in the cabinet door and the broken china and the grey man with the bandage.
Then she looked at me, and I saw in her pale eyes something I had never seen in them.
She was working out a sum.
"You'll never prove it," she said, so low that only I heard.
