Chapter 16: The Marina
I texted Cormac one line from the Corolla, doing seventy on Route 3A.
Quincy marina. Now. Don't speak to her until I do.
He answered right away.
On my way. Padraig with me.
I took the last bend on two wheels and left the car across the gate of the boat yard with the door open.
It was a bright, hard, windy Saturday.
The harbour was white-capped, and the masts clinked all down the pier.
Oonagh's cabin boat sat at the far end of the third dock, a white forty-foot thing with a blue stripe, the one Cormac had never used.
I could see her standing on the afterdeck in her navy Mass coat with her pearls on.
She had Fintan by the hand.
He was in a bright orange life jacket far too big for him, buckled up to his chin, with the brown dog clutched against the front of it.
The boat's lines were already off the cleats at the stern.
The engine idled, and a ribbon of blue exhaust drifted across the water.
She meant to take him out of the harbour.
I ran down the pier in my boots.
The boards boomed under me.
A man in yellow oilskins looked up from a lobster crate, and another from a net he was mending.
At the head of the dock a harbourmaster in a green anorak came out of his hut, and stopped, and said, "Hey, now."
I did not stop.
I reached the stern of the boat as Oonagh put one hand on the throttle.
"Oonagh," I said.
She turned.
Her face was perfectly calm.
"Maureen," she said. "You're trespassing."
