Chapter 19: Tearing Up the Rule
Siobhan's POV
I tore the rules up on the Wednesday night, in the kitchen of the white house in Quincy, with the boy upstairs asleep and Padraig's wife pretending to read a magazine.
I had written them on the back of a laundromat flyer in the first week.
I had kept the flyer in my coat pocket for two months, folded in four, and it had gone soft along the creases.
My hands, my rules.
You don't say my name like it's yours.
You go home to your own bed.
I read them once, in the light over the stove, and I took the flyer in both hands and tore it down the middle.
I tore it again and again until it was confetti, and I dropped the pieces in the bin by the back door.
"Is that what I think it is?" said Padraig's wife, not looking up from the page.
"Yes," I said.
"About time," she said.
"Don't."
"I'm not saying a word," she said, and turned a page, and I saw her smile.
I had Fintan's pyjama bottoms in my coat pocket, because he had left them in the car.
I put them on the hook by the door.
"Go on," she said. "He's asleep. I've the camp bed in his room, and I sleep like a stone. Take the Corolla. Go."
"I've not decided."
"You've decided. You've been decided since the pier."
I went.
I drove across the city at eleven at night through the empty streets, with the radio off.
The house on Savin Hill Avenue was dark except for one light on the third floor.
I let myself in with the key he had sent round in an envelope, a plain brass key with a bit of tape on it that said SIOBHAN.
I had not asked for it.
I climbed the stairs in my socks.
The green door was open.
He was sitting on the edge of the bed in the lamplight, with his elbows on his knees and his hands hanging.
He looked up.
He did not stand.
"I tore up the rules," I said.
