Chapter 20: Her Reason

Siobhan's POV

Oonagh asked to see me on the Saturday, the night before the table, in the parish hall of St. Margaret's.

She sent the message by hand through the priest, on a card with a gold edge.

I read it on the porch in Quincy with Fintan at my knee, building a tower of wooden blocks on the boards.

Alone, it said. Eight o'clock. I will say what I have to say once.

"Who's it from?" Fintan asked, without looking up.

"A lady from the church."

"Is it Nana?"

I looked down at him.

He was building very carefully, with his lip tucked in.

"Yes," I said.

"Is she cross?"

"I don't think so."

"She's been cross a lot." He set a block on top, and it wobbled. "I don't mind her. I just don't like it when she holds my arm."

"I know, love," I said.

"Are you going?" he asked.

"Yes," I said.

"Then bring me a biscuit," Fintan said, with great dignity. "They have the good ones at the hall."

I went at eight.

One row of lamps was lit along the far wall of the hall, and the long tables were stacked against the side with their legs in the air.

The place smelled of floor wax and cold tea.

Oonagh sat on a folding chair in the middle of the floor, in a black coat, with her hands folded over her missal.

She did not get up.

The priest stood in the vestry doorway in his shirtsleeves, with his reading glasses on their cord.

He looked from her to me.
