Chapter 8: Shiv

Siobhan's POV

He stood dripping in my doorway at three in the morning, and I watched the water run off his coat onto the floor.

"Take that off before you ruin the boards," I said.

He hung it on the hook, and the sleeves left a dark puddle on the wood.

His hands were blue with cold.

I took them in mine, without thinking, and chafed them hard between my palms.

He stood quite still and let me.

"You said eleven," he said. "You said go home in the morning. I wasn't coming up."

"I know. I saw you from the window at midnight."

"You let me stand there."

"I wanted to see how long you would," I said.

"And?"

"Longer than I thought."

I dropped his hands and pulled the wet sweater up over his head.

He shivered.

I put a towel around his shoulders and rubbed his hair.

Then I looked at his face in the lamplight, and it undid something in me.

He had a day's growth of beard and the red rims of a man who had been standing in sleet for hours.

He was looking at me as if I were a lit window on a long road.

"You read the note," I said.

"I read the note."

"Don't say anything about it."

"I think you're extraordinary," he said.

"I said don't."

"It was one sentence."

"It was one more than I allowed," I said.
