Chapter 9: One Drink
I left him asleep in my bed with the blind drawn and a note on the pillow.
Gone out. Home by nine. Don't follow me.
The Quincy marina was forty minutes south, a grey crescent of docks and sheds with the harbour wind coming straight off the water.
I parked the Corolla beside a rusted boat trailer at five in the morning, and I sat with my hands on the wheel.
Padraig was standing at the end of a long pier with his back to me, in the grey Carhartt, looking at the water.
I walked out along the boards.
The planks were wet, and the cold came up through my boots.
He heard me coming and did not turn.
"You came alone," he said.
"I did."
"He doesn't know?"
"He was asleep," I said. "He thinks I went for milk."
Padraig nodded.
He was a large man, and he had always moved quietly for his size.
In the grey light I could see that he had not slept either.
"I've told myself for five years I didn't see it," he said. "I want you to know that first. I've said it to the mirror. I've said it at confession."
"What didn't you see?"
"I'll tell you what I know." He still did not turn. "I'll not tell you what I think. I don't have the right to think it."
"All right."
"The night they brought you back from Worcester, Oonagh drove the first leg. She was in the front seat, and Cormac was in the back with you. You were asleep against the window."
"I wasn't asleep," I said. "I was drugged."
"I know that now." His shoulders moved. "I didn't then. I thought you were worn out."
