Chapter 15: The Ledger

The Harbor Club lounge was nearly empty at four on Tuesday.

Rain ran down the tall windows, and a waiter laid out two napkins and left.

Leland sat at a corner table with a grey box file in front of him.

He stood when I came in, and I let him stay standing.

Simon had taken a stool at the far end of the bar.

He had his back to us and a glass he did not touch.

I noticed that he had picked the one seat where he could see the whole room in the mirror.

I noticed I was glad of it, and I sat down.

"Thank you for coming," Leland said.

"Show me."

He opened the box.

"Two years of transfers," he said. "My finance team moved every one.

"Cecily's assistant sent each with a note that said Hugh's physiotherapy fund. I signed without reading the names."

"You didn't read them."

"I didn't want to."

He pushed the first folder across.

I opened it and saw columns of dates and sums, each with a stamped line at the bottom.

"I took this to the police at nine this morning," he said. "They have copies of everything."

"Then why am I here?"

"Because I wanted you to see I didn't wait to be asked."

I looked at him.

The skin under his eyes was dark, and his hand on the table shook a little.
