Chapter 17: You Let Me Go In

Simon put the phone on the desk and stepped back from me.

"I'll send four men to your father's road," he said. "They'll sit outside until she's inside with the lights out."

"Like the warehouse."

"What?"

"Four on the roof, two at the dock gate."

I slid off the desk and pulled my blouse straight.

"You're good at putting men where they can see."

"Imogen."

"I've been trying not to say this since four in the morning."

He went still.

"Say it."

"You let me walk in."

The lamp hummed.

"You had a crew around that building," I said. "You could have met the car at the gate.

"You could have taken me out of the back seat before Hugh got his hand on my arm."

"You asked me not to."

"I know I did."

"You said it had to look real from the car."

"I know what I said." My voice cracked, and I let it.

"Hugh dug his fingers into my arm until the bone hurt, and your men were fifty yards away.

"Leland drove off without looking back, and I stood there and watched him do it."

"It was the only way to catch her."

"I know that too."

"Then what do you want me to say?"

"That it cost something."

I pushed up my sleeve.

The marks were yellow now, four of them in a row.

"That you saw it cost me, and you let it happen because I told you to, and you were sorry."

He looked at my arm for a long time.
