We rode west for two days.
Min-jun didn't talk much.
He kept his sleeve down over the mark. It glowed through the cloth at night.
We came to the hills on the second evening.
The gateway hung over the valley like a hole burned through a sheet of paper.
It wasn't black anymore. It had gone gray, and it was moving, slow, like water going around in a bowl.
Below it there was a road.
Two hundred shinigami stood along that road in a line.
The commanders were at the front.
The gray one was in the middle.
They'd followed us.
"Go back," I said.
"Can't."
"You'll get your men killed."
"They're not my men," the gray commander said. "They're his."
He pointed at Min-jun.
"He's human," I said.
"He's got the mark on his wrist."
