Chapter 4: Bags on the Lawn

My key did not fit the front door of my own house.

I tried it three times in the porch light, and then I looked down at the lawn.

My clothes were on the grass in black trash bags.

Six of them, knotted at the top, lined up along the walk.

My winter coat was draped over the hedge, and my work shoes had been thrown into the flower bed.

Across the street, a porch light came on.

Then another one.

A neighbor I had waved to for five years stood in her doorway with her arms folded and did not wave back.

I stood on the walk with the key still in my hand.

Trevor had made it home before me and done all of this in under an hour.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

Babe, I hate that it came to this. Withdraw the audit by nine tomorrow, or I tell the police you've been moving company money for years. Don't make me.

I read it standing next to a bag with my name on it in marker.

Then I took a picture of the lawn, the bags, the lock and the house number.

I took a picture of the text.

I had spent six years trusting one man to be honest about money, and I was not going to make that mistake with the evidence.

I picked up as many bags as I could carry and called the only person I had left.

"Bernie," I said, when she picked up. "Can I come over?"

"Where are you?"

"On my lawn."

"Stay there," my aunt said. "I'm putting my shoes on."

"No, I'll take a cab. Bernie, please don't drive at night."

"Don't you tell me what to do. I raised you."

She was in her car at the curb within the half hour, in a bathrobe and rain boots, and she took one look at the bags and said a word I had never heard her say.
