Chapter 5: The Audit Room
At seven in the morning I walked into the boardroom on the fourteenth floor in the same suit I had worn to the dinner.
Five people sat at the long table.
The audit chair, the retired judge, sat at the head with a legal pad.
The company's finance chief sat on her right, and Thane sat across from her with his jaw set.
A woman I had never seen before had a laptop open at the far end.
She stood up and shook my hand.
"I'm the forensic auditor," she said. "The chair called me at midnight. Sit down."
I sat.
The finance chief spoke before anyone else could.
"I want it on the record that this is an internal personnel matter," she said. "Ms. Prewitt is the subject of the inquiry, not its author."
"Ms. Prewitt is the author of the request," the judge said without looking up.
"A director who has been receiving forty-one thousand dollars a month for six years is not a victim."
"She has told us she never received it."
"She signed for it."
"Then we will see whose hand signed," the judge said. "Please begin."
Thane did not look at me, but his hand opened flat on the table.
The auditor turned her laptop toward the room.
"Account 4471 has received Ms. Prewitt's net pay every month for six years," she said. "The first change of deposit is dated the first day of her employment."
"Because she did it herself," said the finance chief.
"Maybe."
I took out my phone and laid it on the table with the picture already open.
"These are my first three pay stubs," I said. "They were mailed to my aunt's house, and she kept them."
"If the change had happened on my first day, none of these would have reached me."
