Chapter 45: The Defense
I lay there with the phone against my ear and Nicholas's arm heavy across me.
"He wants me to save him," I said.
"He wants the jury to watch a pregnant woman save him," the lawyer said. "That's a different thing. You can refuse. They can subpoena you, and you'd still have to go."
"I'm not going to refuse."
Nicholas lifted his head off the pillow.
"Christina."
"He asked me for the second row in April," I said. "He's getting the witness stand instead."
The trial opened on Monday, September thirteenth, in a courtroom with oak walls and a ceiling fan that ticked.
The People went first.
On Wednesday my father took the stand in his good gray suit.
He walked to it without the cane his doctor wanted him to use, and he made the court officer wait while he climbed the two steps himself.
The prosecutor asked him how he felt about the defendant now.
"I paid for his braces," my father said. "I'd like that on the record."
Two jurors smiled before they could stop themselves.
He turned in the chair and looked at the defense table for the first time.
