Chapter 46: Hold the Light
Bryant's tissue stopped halfway to his eyes.
He was still in the witness chair.
The judge had to tell him twice to step down, and when he did, he walked back to the defense table without once taking his eyes off the side door.
Shelby didn't look at him.
She looked at the jury first, the way she used to look at a room from the top of a staircase.
Then she put her cuffed hands on the Bible and swore to tell the truth.
When she sat down in the chair Bryant had just warmed, she finally turned her head.
"Hi, baby," she said.
Somebody on the press benches laughed out loud.
The prosecutor didn't waste a minute on her.
"Mrs. Ferraro, in August of last year, did the defendant ever beg you not to tamper with your father-in-law's car?"
Shelby laughed, a soft little Texas laugh.
"He begged me to wait. That's different."
Three jurors wrote that down.
Bryant's lawyer was on his feet.
"Objection. The witness is a confessed..."
"Overruled. She's a witness. Sit down, counselor."
