Chapter 13: The Rank Test

Confinement turned out to be the best nap of Lucas's two lives, for about a day and a half.

Then the guards outside his door started coughing every time he turned a page.

He lay on the window seat with his bare feet up on the cushions and his hair in his eyes.

The system had been silent since the writ.

"You could say something," Lucas told the ceiling.

HOLD ON ALPHAS: TROY 64%, FELIX 57%, JULIUS 52%, the system said.

"That's not what I meant."

It said nothing else.

Julius came through the door without knocking, because the guards had stopped trying to keep a Prime out.

He knelt in front of the window seat, took Lucas's left foot in both hands, and began to rub his ankle.

"You have been pacing," Julius said.

"I haven't moved since breakfast."

"Your ankle says otherwise. You have a habit. You walk on the outside of the foot when you are angry."

Lucas looked down at the scarred brow bent over his foot.

Julius's thumbs were hot and slow, working along the tendon, and the warmth ran straight up the back of Lucas's knee.

He made himself breathe evenly.

Julius's ears went red.

He did not let go.

"I can hear you thinking, Julius," Lucas said.

"Then hear this. Melinda has called a test."

Lucas sat up. "What kind of test?"

"A rank test, before the whole Court, at noon." Julius's jaw set. "She says the inquiry needs proof of what the Supreme Omega truly is, and that you must show it with your own scent, on the stone."

"The stone in the Great Hall? The one the first-year omegas touch?"

"The same."

Troy and Felix came in behind him, and Troy shut the door with his shoulder.

"It reads control," Felix said, in the voice he used for facts. "Every omega's scent is measured at the moment of the test. If he leaks, it flares red. If he holds, it stays white."

"Before the system, you leaked," Troy said. "Everyone knew it. You smelled like burnt honey all over court."

"Thank you, Troy."

"I'm saying she thinks you'll flare. She wants you red in front of the whole realm, so the inquiry can say you bewitched us by accident and cannot be trusted with a seat."
