Chapter 14: Optimus

Felix came to Lucas's rooms after midnight with a small black book in his hand.

He had tied his hair back neatly, as always, and he stood just inside the door, waiting to be told where to put himself.

"You are not allowed visitors after dark," Lucas said from the bed.

"The guards were very understanding."

"Did you put them on the floor?"

"They sat down on their own." Felix's pale eyes slid away. "You left a good deal of your scent in the corridor."

Lucas patted the mattress, and Felix crossed the room and sat on the edge of it, with a very straight back.

He held out the book.

"I should give you this before I lose my nerve. I have wanted to for some time."

Lucas opened it.

The first page was a list, in a small, exact hand.

The date of the birthday hearing, and the words: Looked at me, twice. Once in the corridor. Once over the herald's shoulder. Eyes grey, not blue as I'd thought.

The second page was the library.

He turned the pages slowly.

Every line was a look, a word, or the angle of Lucas's mouth when he'd been about to laugh.

"You wrote all of this down," Lucas said.

"I am a record keeper. It is how I think."

"You have a whole page about my hair."

"It falls to the left. You push it right. It falls again." Felix's voice stayed perfectly level, but his ears had gone pink. "I found it restful."

Lucas closed the book and laid it on the table with great care.

"Felix."

"Yes."

"Take your coat off."

Felix took off the coat.

"Shirt."

The shirt came off over his head, and the silver hair came loose over his shoulders.

His chest was pale and lean, with Lucas's mark in the middle of it, healed to a neat, dark crescent.

His stomach was still flat, with only a faint new tightness low down under the skin.

"The rest of the book is on the last page," Felix said, as he stood to unbuckle his belt. "The part that matters. You should read that before..."

"After."

"But it concerns the Omega Hall."

"After," said Lucas. "Tonight I'm only looking at you."

Felix stopped with his hands at his waist.

He looked, for a moment, almost frightened by how much he wanted it.

"Then give me an order," he said. "I do not know how to begin without one."
