Chapter 14: The First Night
Magnus cooked for six hours, and he did not let Teddy into the kitchen.
"I'm good at chopping," Teddy said through the door.
"You are good at talking."
"I can talk while chopping."
"That is how people lose fingers."
Teddy sat on the sofa he hated and listened to a pan hiss.
Admiral sat beside him and watched the hall with a worried eye.
At seven the door opened, and Magnus stood in it in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow.
The table behind him was laid with two plates, two candles and one folded cloth napkin per person.
Every dish had a small card beside it in block capitals.
KJØTTKAKER. MY GRANDMOTHER'S. BROWN GRAVY. LINGONBERRIES. POTATOES, BOILED.
"You labeled the dinner," Teddy said.
"It's what I know how to do."
"Is there a label for me?"
Magnus reached behind him and came back with a card.
He held it out.
It said, in neat black ink, TEDDY. SIT HERE.
Teddy sat there.
The meatballs were soft and peppery and swimming in gravy, and the first bite made him close his eyes.
"Oh my God."
"Is it all right?"
"I want to marry your grandmother."
"She died in two thousand nine."
"I want to marry her anyway."
Magnus put a hand over his mouth, and his shoulders shook.
They ate for an hour, and talked about nothing, and it was the best conversation Teddy had ever had.
Magnus told him about Astoria, the fog, a father who had fixed boats and never said more than he had to.
Teddy told him about the time he drove a van full of ferns into a lake.
At eight Magnus put his fork down, and the room changed.
He looked at the candle.
He looked at Teddy's hand on the cloth, and then at the long line of Teddy's throat.
"Teddy."
"Yeah?"
