Chapter 15: Morning Rain
"It's raining," Teddy said.
"I know," said Magnus.
"The underwear is outside."
"I know."
"Thirty-one pairs of pressed, dated, labeled underwear are on my rack in the rain."
"Dunleavy," said Magnus, in a voice of deep calm, "get the basket."
It had started to come down hard.
The sky over Clinton Street opened.
For a full minute two grown men in shirts and shorts ran back and forth over the rail.
They tore clothespins off the line and flung cotton at each other.
Teddy ran with an armful of whales and flamingos and lobsters.
Magnus ran with the avocados held over his head.
"Tape's running," Teddy yelled.
"It's masking tape, it will survive!"
"Not on the plaid!"
"The plaid is a lost cause!"
They fell back through the sliding door in a wet heap.
Admiral had slept through the whole disaster in the basket, and he opened one eye and closed it.
Teddy lay on the floor and laughed until his stomach hurt.
Magnus sat beside him with a soaked pair of MONDAYS in his hand, and his shoulders shook.
