Chapter 13: Stranger in the Kitchen
"I'm the man who built you," Micah said.
His voice came out thin, so he said it again.
"I wrote your attachment code. I'm the one who took you off the furnace line three nights ago."
Ansel nodded politely.
"Thank you for the rescue, Mr. MacCallum."
"Don't call me that."
"What should I call you?"
Micah opened his mouth and found he did not know.
The ferry had stopped at the last pier, and a deckhand was calling down the stairs that the boat was done for the night.
Micah took Ansel up onto the dock.
Ansel followed one step behind him, hands folded, and stopped whenever Micah stopped.
The flat belonged to Astrid's late aunt.
A year ago Astrid had pressed the key into his palm and said, "For when you finally lose it."
It was in Chelsea, two blocks from the pier, over a closed fish market.
