Chapter 14: New Rules
"I can't tell you why," Micah said. "I only know what you told me you wanted."
"That isn't an answer."
"It's the only one I have that's true."
Ansel looked at him for a long time.
Then he took a pen from the table, turned over the back of a utility bill, and began to write.
"I would like to make some rules," he said.
"Okay."
"You will not give me an order. Not a small one, and not a kind one."
"I wouldn't."
"You did on the ferry. You said, 'Look at me.' I looked, because that's what I do."
Micah's face went hot.
"That wasn't..."
"I'm not angry. I'm telling you that I can't tell yet whether I did it because I wanted to."
He wrote the second line.
"I decide where I sleep, where I sit and when I leave. If I leave, you don't follow."
"All right."
"I read everything. Your messages about me, your notes, the lab files. You don't take a page out first."
Micah swallowed.
"All right."
"And you don't tell me how I felt. You tell me what I did. I'll decide what it meant."
