Vaneck came down the aisle at an easy walk, fob raised.
Chairs scraped as reporters pulled their feet back.
"Kirk," said the board chair, very clearly. "You are no longer an employee of this company."
"I know," Vaneck said. "I'm not here for the company."
He stopped ten feet from Ansel.
"Hello, E-0. We left something unfinished."
Micah moved in front of him.
Ansel put a hand on Micah's arm and gently moved him aside.
"It's all right," he said.
"It's not."
"I'd like to see what he does."
Vaneck smiled at the cameras, which had swung toward him like sunflowers.
"This is a perfectly safe demonstration," he said. "A device that every owner should know exists. Press the button, and the unit goes quiet, forever."
He lifted the clear cover and put his thumb on the red button.
"Say no again, E-0."
"No," Ansel said.
Vaneck pressed.
Nothing happened.
Two hundred reporters leaned forward.
Vaneck pressed again, and again, and a third time with his whole arm shaking.
"It's burnt out," Astrid said from the lectern.
