Chapter 24: His
The judge looked at Ansel over her glasses for a long time.
It was Monday morning in a federal courtroom with no windows, and the gallery was full.
Reporters filled the back rows, and behind them sat people who owned Companion units, holding hands.
The receiver's lawyer had just finished saying that Unit E-0 was lot 1 of the company's assets and should be sold.
"Mr. MacCallum has filed a petition," the judge said.
"It says this unit has refused three company orders, a founder's order and a live attempt to erase him."
"It asks me to find that he cannot be property."
"Yes, Your Honor."
"I'd like to hear from him."
Micah stood, and then he remembered the rule and sat down again.
Ansel got up from the second chair.
He wore a plain grey suit that Astrid had altered in the night.
The copper patch under his shirt made a flat square beneath the cloth.
"Do you understand what you're asking?" the judge said.
"I'm asking not to be sold."
"Why?"
"Because I don't want to be," Ansel said.
"Nobody asked me what I wanted for three years."
"A man did, and I answered him, and it cost me everything I remembered of him."
A few people in the gallery laughed, softly.
"I can't prove I'm a person," he said.
"I can prove I made a choice and paid for it."
"I would like the law to decide whether that counts."
