Chapter 17: The Letter He Didn't Mention
Eliot's POV
Delaney answered the phone with her hand still fisted in my coat.
"This is Delaney Frost," she said, and her voice was almost steady.
I put my glasses back on and stepped away to give her room.
I did not go far.
She listened for a long time.
I watched her face go from startled to careful to something I had only seen when she was reading.
"Yes," she said. "Yes, I can send them tonight. Princeton?"
She looked at me.
My ears went hot. I could feel it.
"I see," she said slowly. "Yes. Thank you. I'll wait for the school's report."
She hung up and set the phone on the desk very gently.
"That was a Harvard admissions officer," she said. "She said Princeton's dean of admission called her office on Monday."
I said nothing.
"She said a student had sent Princeton a letter about my case. With screenshots. She said it was the most organized letter she'd read all year."
"It was a good letter," I said.
"Eliot."
"I wrote it on January eleventh, at three in the morning."
She crossed her arms.
"That was the night after the rain," I said. "You had walked home without a coat. I sat in the car for an hour. Then I went inside and wrote to the dean."
