Chapter 18: The Record

Delaney's POV

The school's report was four pages long, and the principal made us all sit while he signed it.

It was the Monday after College Night, in his office with the gray carpet.

My mom sat on my left in her scrubs, because she had come straight off shift and refused to go home first.

Tate sat on my right.

His father stood behind him with his arms crossed.

Hallie sat in the corner chair with her mother beside her, and neither of them looked at the other.

Eliot was outside in the hall, because he wasn't family, and he had refused to leave.

"I'll read the summary," the principal said. "Then each of you signs where I've marked."

He put on his glasses.

"Both students are named as authors, and Ms. Coldwell is named as the planner. The district received a copy at eight this morning."

Tate's father said, "Principal, my son's statement is..."

"Your son's statement is an exhibit," the principal said. "He recorded it himself on Friday and sent it to me. He signed it."

His father turned.

Tate looked at the carpet.

"Dad," he said. "Stop."

His mouth opened and then shut.

I had not seen him without a sentence ready before.

"Harvard, Yale and Princeton have accepted Ms. Frost's corrected essays," the principal said. "This report goes to them as the reason."
