Chapter 19: The Gates
Danny turned the TV off so hard the remote cracked.
"Retires," he said. "In front of everyone."
"She's going to do it on stage," I said. "With a microphone. And the press will call it a lovely evening."
My phone buzzed.
Jody. "DID YOU SEE THAT BITCH."
Then the woman I trained. "Is this real?"
Then the boy with the ponytail. "I can't do this."
Then the boy with the ponytail again, a minute later. "Sorry. I can. I'm doing it."
I put the phone face down and looked at my arm.
The gold line had passed my shoulder in the night and started across my collarbone.
On Wednesday I knocked on my closet door and asked Hades to show me the gates.
"Why?" he said.
"Rule one. You keep saying 'lock them.' I want to see what that means."
He took me down the river in the ferryman's boat.
He rowed himself.
We went a long way, past the house, past the orchard, past black cliffs with the blue lights drowning slowly under the water.
