Chapter 20: Her Terms
I didn't sleep.
I sat on the couch with the key against my ribs and my alarm going off every ninety minutes for no reason.
The key never got cold.
At six, the ferryman started banging pots in the kitchen.
He cooked every morning, whether there was anyone to eat it or not.
Eggs, this morning. Bread. Something with honey and figs that made my stomach cramp with wanting it.
I went in and sat at his little kitchen table, the one with the knife marks in it.
He set a bottle of water in front of me, seal on.
He looked at the shape of the key under my sweater.
He didn't say a word.
He just put a second cup out across from me, and poured coffee in it.
Hades came in five minutes later.
He'd been in the orchard all night. There was bark on his shoulder and grass on his shoes.
He looked at the open desk drawer through the study door behind me.
Then he looked at me.
The lamps along the wall went very slightly dimmer.
