Chapter 33: Gown Pocket
The letter was in the left pocket of my graduation gown, folded in thirds.
I'd been carrying it for nine days.
In March I'd mailed photographs of her work to a costume shop in New York.
They built the gowns for half the shows on Broadway.
Her corset for the play nobody came to. Her red dress on a form, under the studio lights.
I didn't tell her. I didn't want her to wait for a no.
They wrote back yes. They wanted to meet her in September.
The firm with the glass museum wanted me in September too.
I had a speech. I'd practiced it on Nonno, who said it was too long and I should just kiss her.
The ceremony ran three hours on the main quad.
Nonno sat in the third row in a suit that had been made for a larger man.
He had a disposable camera and took a picture every time anybody stood up.
That morning Lucia had tied my tie in my bathroom mirror, standing behind me, because I'd done it wrong twice.
Dark blue silk. She'd made it from a remnant and wouldn't let me see the lining.
