Chapter 34: Rush Street
The club was closing when the cab let me out.
A red rope. Two men at the door with necks wider than their heads.
Girls in short dresses were coming out in pairs, carrying their shoes.
I walked up to the rope in my graduation suit with her tie in my pocket.
"I'd like to see Mr. Lazzaro."
The bigger one laughed. Then the other one did.
"Prom's over, kid."
"I'd like to see Mr. Lazzaro. It's about Joe Morelli."
They stopped laughing at the name, but only for a second.
I asked four more times.
The fifth time, one of them took me by the back of the collar and walked me upstairs.
I think he meant to throw me out a higher door.
Vito's office was at the top of the stairs.
It had red carpet and a desk the size of a car.
A man in shirtsleeves was counting cash into a drawer.
Vito Lazzaro sat behind the desk with a cigar and his collar open, and a gold ring on every finger he had.
He looked at my suit. He looked at the cardboard tube sticking out of my inside pocket.
"What's in the tube?"
"My diploma."
